Slingshot Fund

The idea for Slingshot originated in Grand Street, a network for 18 to 28 year-olds who are or will soon be involved in their families' philanthropy. Unable to navigate the complex map of Jewish institutions offering involvement and looking for Jewish life that resonated with their generation, Grand Street members proposed developing a Zagat-style guide. Their idea evolved into the Slingshot: A Resource Guide to Jewish Innovation, an annual compilation of the 50 most inspiring and innovative organizations, projects, and programs in the North American Jewish community today. First published in 2005, and now in its third edition, Slingshot continues to highlight those organizations in Jewish life with particular resonance among the next generation.

After Slingshot was first published, the original group of funders decided to establish the Slingshot Fund to help support the innovative and often nascent organizations featured in the guides each year. The Slingshot Fund is designed to highlight, encourage and provide support for a subset of the undercapitalized organizations featured in Slingshot. Founded by Jews in their 20s and 30s, the Fund aims to provide a new model for raising and distributing grants by engaging people in Jewish philanthropy who would otherwise not be involved.
